Many times, your cabinets or vanity are the focal point of your bathroom, so you probably want to allocate a decent amount of your renovation budget to upgrading your cabinets (about 30%).

Upgrading your cabinets can cost anywhere from $300-$4,000+.

We know that’s a huge price range so we’ll explain the different cabinet/vanity upgrades that will impact the cost.

Below, we’ve listed the common options—from least to most expensive—for upgrading your bathroom cabinets...

• • Refinishing cabinets- If you like your current cabinet layout and look, but want a different color or stain, you can easily refresh the look of your cabinets with refinishing. If you want to hire a professional, the cost of refinishing will increase, but the finished look will probably be worth it. For example, when we refinish cabinets we fully wash and sand all cabinets, apply 2-3 coats of high-performance coating, and then apply multiple coats of our waterborne finishing product. This makes a difference in the long-term look and quality of refinishing.
  • Refacing cabinets- If you like the layout of your cabinets but you don’t like the style, refacing them is a cost-effective option. This allows you to keep the structure of your cabinets but completely replace the doors with a style and color/finish that you like, giving them a completely new look.
  • Remodeling cabinets- If you want to completely restyle your cabinets but keep them in the same general location, this is the best option for you. With cabinet remodeling, you can add and remove cabinet boxes as well as completely replace cabinet doors and drawers, giving your cabinets a completely new look.am
  • Ripping cabinets out and starting over - Obviously completely ripping out your cabinets and starting over is going to be the most expensive route. We’d pretty much only suggest going with this option if you want to completely reformat your bathroom and move your cabinetry to a different location in your bathroom. Keep in mind that you will also need to factor in the cost of labor and any flooring repairs you will have to make when you move your cabinets.

Refinishing or replacing your bathroom countertops can cost anywhere from $150 to $2,000+.

The biggest factors that will affect this cost are:

1. The material of the countertop you choose- The cost of your countertop will vary based on the type of material you choose. For example, if you choose marble or quartz countertops, they will be a lot more expensive than a cheaper material like laminate or a DIY solution like painting or wrapping your existing countertop. 2. The size of the countertop- Obviously, the larger the countertop is, the more expensive it will be. The price will also increase if you have multiple countertops to install.

Keep in mind that when it comes to your countertops, you will also have to consider the cost of labor for the installation. Installing a new countertop is not something that most homeowners would be comfortable doing, so if you plan to have your countertops installed by a professional, you’ll need to account for the cost of labor in your overall budget.

Your bathroom probably has the most fixtures of any room in your house, and upgrading all of them can add up. However, the fixtures that will cost the most include:

1. Shower ($200-$3,000) – There are so many factors that can affect the cost of your shower upgrade. For example, are you ripping out a shower/tub combo and retiling the space? Are you leaving your shower structure as is but want to change the showerhead to a newer or more luxurious type? If you’re doing anything other than replacing your shower head, you’ll most likely need the help of a professional, so our recommendation would be to get a few quotes on your shower renovation to get a clearer idea of what the cost will be.
   
2. Bath ($200-$5,000)– Installing a new bathtub has quite the price range, and that mostly depends on the material and type of bathtub you choose.
   1. Material- For example, fiberglass or acrylic bathtubs are going to be a lot less expensive than marble or cast iron.
   2. Type- The type of bathtub also plays a role here. Alcove bathtubs are less expensive than walk-in or whirlpool bathtubs.
3. Toilet ($150-$500)- The two biggest cost factors when it comes to upgrading your toilet are the type of toilet and whether or not the toilet is staying in the same location.
   1. Type of toilet - If you want to replace your existing toilet with a basic toilet, it will be less expensive than if you install a toilet with smart features or an upgraded flushing system.
   2. Moving your toilet - If you want to move your toilet, you’ll need to factor in the cost of plumbing, the cost of labor to move the plumbing, and any damage to the floor that is done when the plumbing is moved.

Flooring is one of the most expensive parts of remodeling your bathroom, but the good news is, you have options. Typically, redoing your bathroom flooring will cost anywhere from $200-$1,500.

If you plan on ripping up your current flooring and replacing it, you need to consider the cost of:

• Disposing of old flooring
• New flooring (cost will depend on material and amount)
• Labor (of course, if you rip up your existing flooring and install new flooring on your own, this cost will be free)

If you plan on keeping your current flooring, you need to consider the cost of:

• Any other renovations that will affect the current flooring (like ripping out a vanity or moving a toilet)
• Noninvasive DIY options like stick-on tile
